To Medan on Sumatra
First you'll have to get to Medan on Sumatra in Indonesia. There are a number of international flights flying in from Penang, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Singapore. (Garuda, Malaysian Airlines, Silkair, China Air, Lion Air, Jatayu, Air Asia a.o.). From Penang (Malaysia) there is also a daily fast ferry to Medan.

From Medan to Banda Aceh

There are 2 airline companies offering daily flights between Medan and Banda Aceh: Jatayu Air and Garuda Airlines.

TIP: The Jatayu flight at 07.00 in the morning connects to the first fast ferry at 9.30 to Pulau Weh. This will get you from Medan to Pulau Weh in less than 4 hours. Another good connection is the afternoon 12:40 flight by Garuda and then the 16:00 ferry.

From Banda Aceh to Pulau Weh
From the airport of Banda Aceh, it's about half an hour by car to the harbour Ulee Lheue, from where the fast ferries to Balohan (Pulau Weh's ferry harbour) are leaving.

In Balohan on Pulau Weh there will be mini busses waiting to take you to the town Sabang (around Rp 7.000), from where you can look for some local transport to the beaches (Rp 10-20.000 per person or 80-100.000 charter). There are not enough regular schedules of public transport though. Taxi's on the island are fairly expensive, count on around 125.000 for a taxi from the harbour straight to Gapang Beach, or around 100.000 from the town Sabang to Gapang for the one hour scenic trip around bays and over steep hills with prime forest and many monkeys.
